Recovery

After a setback

One moment is data, not a verdict. You're still here.

Read this first

If you are in immediate danger or feel you might harm yourself or someone else, please stop and call 911 or a crisis line immediately. Your safety is the most important thing.

First, breathe

You are not your behavior. A setback is a moment in time, not a definition of who you are.

Take a deep breath. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six. Repeat this a few times. Ground yourself in this present moment.

Practice self-compassion

It's common to feel shame, guilt, or anger after a setback. Acknowledge these feelings without judgment. What would you say to a dear friend in this situation?

  • Speak to yourself with that same kindness.

  • Remind yourself that recovery is not a straight line.

  • This is an opportunity to learn, not a failure.

Gather data, not judgment

Think about what led to this moment. This isn't about blame, it's about understanding.

  1. What were the triggers? (A person, place, feeling, or event)
  2. What was your internal state? (Stressed, lonely, tired, hungry?)
  3. What can you learn from this experience to strengthen your plan for next time?
