What it does
Holding an object and paying close attention to its weight, temperature, and shape gives your hands a specific job that can interrupt spiraling thoughts and bring focus back to the body.
How to practice
- 1Pick up an object nearby — a phone, a stone, a mug, a book.
- 2Notice its weight in your palm before doing anything else.
- 3Close your hand around it and notice its shape and edges.
- 4Notice its temperature against your skin.
- 5Switch it to your other hand and notice if it feels different.
- 6Set it down and notice how your hand feels once it's empty.
When to use it
Racing thoughts, anxiety, or moments when you need a quick object-based reset.
Often helpful for
Racing thoughts, anxiety, restlessness, mild dissociation.
Benefits
- Uses any object already within reach
