Five Senses & Sensory Grounding

The Slow Sip

1-2 minutes.

What it does

Drinking something slowly and paying full attention to its taste and temperature interrupts the urge to rush and gives the mind a small, embodied task to focus on instead of spiraling thoughts.

How to practice

  1. 1Pour a small amount of water, tea, or another drink you have on hand.
  2. 2Before sipping, notice its temperature against the cup or glass.
  3. 3Take one small sip and hold it in your mouth for a second before swallowing.
  4. 4Notice the taste, temperature, and how it feels moving down your throat.
  5. 5Take a second sip, slower than the first, and notice if anything changed.
  6. 6Set the drink down and take one full breath before continuing.

When to use it

Overwhelm, restlessness, or moments when you're rushing through your day without noticing anything.

Often helpful for

Overwhelm, restlessness, racing thoughts, mild anxiety.

Benefits

  • Uses something you likely already have within reach
  • Combines taste, temperature, and touch in one simple action
  • Easy to repeat throughout the day as a recurring reset
