Five Senses & Sensory Grounding

The Sensory Anchor Object

1-2 minutes.

What it does

Carrying one small object chosen specifically for how it looks, feels, and possibly smells gives you an on-demand, multisensory grounding tool you can return to in any environment.

How to practice

  1. 1Choose a small object to carry with you — a smooth stone, a piece of jewelry, a small fabric square.
  2. 2When you need to ground, take it out and look at it closely, noticing its color and detail.
  3. 3Hold it and notice its texture and temperature.
  4. 4If it has a scent, bring it close and notice that too.
  5. 5Turn it over in your hand a few times, noticing how the sensations shift.
  6. 6Put it away and take one breath before returning to what you were doing.

When to use it

Situations where you want a consistent, portable grounding object — commuting, waiting rooms, difficult conversations.

Often helpful for

Anxiety, panic, restlessness, dissociation.

Benefits

  • Creates a consistent, portable multisensory tool
