What it does
A structured sweep through all five senses that gives an overwhelmed or spiraling mind a clear, finite task to complete, which can help shift attention away from a stress loop and back into the present room.
How to practice
- 1Sit or stand somewhere you can look around freely.
- 2Name 5 things you can see — say them out loud or in your head, one at a time.
- 3Name 4 things you can hear right now.
- 4Name 3 things you can physically feel (the chair, your feet, your sleeve).
- 5Name 2 things you can smell, or two things you remember smelling recently if nothing is present.
- 6Name 1 thing you can taste, or take a sip of water and notice that instead.
- 7Take one slow breath before returning to what you were doing.
When to use it
Panic rising, a flashback beginning, or a moment when your thoughts are moving faster than you can follow.
Often helpful for
Panic, anxiety, dissociation, racing thoughts, overwhelm.
Benefits
- Gives the mind a concrete sequence to follow instead of the spiral
- Engages all five senses rather than just one
- Portable — works anywhere, no props needed
- Often shortens the intensity of a panic spike
