Five Senses & Sensory Grounding

Hot and Cold Contrast

2-3 minutes.

What it does

Alternating your hands between something warm and something cool creates a strong, unmistakable physical sensation that can pull attention out of a mental spiral and into the body.

How to practice

  1. 1Fill one container or run one tap with cool water and have something warm nearby (a warm mug, a heating pad, warm water).
  2. 2Place your hands in or on the cool source first and notice the sensation for several seconds.
  3. 3Move to the warm source and notice how different it feels.
  4. 4Go back and forth two or three times, noticing the contrast each time.
  5. 5Shake your hands out gently once you're done.
  6. 6Take a slow breath and notice your hands returning to a neutral temperature.

When to use it

Dissociation, panic, or moments when you feel numb and need a strong physical signal to reconnect.

Often helpful for

Dissociation, panic, numbness, anger.

Benefits
