What it does
Slows breathing to match an individual's personal "resonance frequency" — typically somewhere in the range of about 4.5 to 6.5 breaths per minute — which is the pace at which heart rate variability tends to be maximized for that specific person.
How to practice
- 1Sit comfortably and breathe naturally for a few breaths first.
- 2Begin inhaling slowly through the nose for roughly 5-6 seconds.
- 3Exhale slowly, with no pause or hold, for roughly 5-6 seconds.
- 4Keep the inhale and exhale roughly equal in length, with smooth transitions and no holding at either end.
- 5Continue at this unhurried pace, adjusting the exact count slightly (a bit faster or slower) until it feels like the most natural, settling rhythm for your own body.
- 6Continue for 5-10 minutes.
When it helps
General anxiety management, chronic stress, building overall emotional resilience over time rather than needing an immediate in-the-moment reset.
Benefits
Associated with increased heart rate variability, a marker linked to better stress resilience and nervous system flexibility; because there's no holding involved, it's gentle enough for daily practice.
A note on safety
Finding your exact personal resonance frequency usually takes some experimentation or, ideally, HRV biofeedback equipment — the count above is a reasonable general starting point, not a precise fit for everyone.
