What it does
Deliberately makes the exhale longer than the inhale (in any ratio, such as inhale 4/exhale 6, or inhale 4/exhale 8), which leans on the body's natural tendency to activate the calming (parasympathetic) side of the nervous system more during longer exhales.
How to practice
- 1Inhale through the nose for a count of 4.
- 2Exhale slowly through the nose or slightly parted lips for a count of 6 to 8 — longer than the inhale, without straining to stretch it further than feels comfortable.
- 3Let the next inhale begin naturally, without rushing.
- 4Repeat for 8-10 rounds, keeping the exhale consistently the longer half of each cycle.
When it helps
General anxiety, agitation, needing to downshift quickly without a complicated pattern to remember.
Benefits
Simple enough to do anywhere without counting elaborately; directly targets the exhale-linked calming response; a good foundation technique before trying more complex patterns.
A note on safety
Avoid forcing the exhale to the point of strain or breathlessness — extend it gradually over several rounds rather than all at once.
